An introduction to the NYDF Goals and the role of the Global Platform for the New York Declaration on Forests.
More than 1.6 billion people depend on forests for food, water, fuel, medicines, traditional cultures and livelihoods. Forests support up to 80% of terrestrial biodiversity and play a vital role in the climate mitigation solution. Yet, each year an average of 13 million hectares of forest disappear, often with devastating impacts on communities and indigenous peoples.
Land use practices and loss of forests and other ecosystems are responsible for nearly a quarter (24%) of global emissions, but the land use sector also provides key solutions to tackle climate change and to achieve the Paris Agreement.
